Homemade Laundry Detergent

I have been wanting to try homemade laundry detergent for a while now. I've looked up and seen several recipes, but my cousin Rachel recommended this particular one. She's used both powdered and liquid. This one was quite simple, so I gave it a try.

We've used it for about a month now and I have been pleasantly surprised at both how well it works and how it smells.

Here is the recipe I got from Rachel. (I actually 5 times-ed it.)

Homemade Powder Laundry Detergent
1 bar Ivory soap, finely grated (It is a soft soap, so it grates very quickly)
1/2 cup Borax
1/2 cup Washing Soda (Be sure to buy Washing Soda, not baking soda.)

Mix well. Use 2-3 tablespoons per load. (I stuck a 1/4 measuring cup in my container and fill just over 1/2 full.)

That is great! What a money saver. I tried homemade laundry detergent and wasn't impressed. Maybe this one is different. Glad that it works.

You probably haven't tried it on baby poop. That is what didn't work with the one I tried.

Where do you buy washing soda and borax? I've looked around here for both and can't seem to find them anywhere, but I'll have my mom bring me some if they sell it around there.

so what are the benefits of making your own? Save money?
Do you think it works better or worse then store bought? I have NEVER even thought of making my own detergent!

Rach, Good question. I found the borax at Walmart (on the bottom shelf, same isle as the detergents) but they didn't have the washing soda. I looked at Home Depot too (we were there for something else) but no luck... I did find it at Macey's grocery store (They had Borax there too).

Sarah,
It doesn't work as well on the major stains. I've just made sure to pre-spot those, which I usually do any way. But yes, it is a major money saver!

I've been making the liquid laundry soap for a couple of years now, it's a very similar recipe, but calls for fels naptha instead of ivory soap, and water obviously. I love paying less than a dollar for 2 gallons of laundry soap!

This looks awesome! I think I'm going to give it a try. Anything to help save money is worth trying to me. Thanks for the recipe.

Natalie,
I make my own soap too and I use Fels Naptha soap instead of Ivory. It is a great stain getter-outer. I have a recipe for liquid soap though. I'll have to try this one.
